Greetings from Lord Howe Island

Article by Roxanne Williams

The World Heritage listed Lord Howe Island is renowned for its multitude of natural wonders including; vibrant coral reef marine parks, lush sub-tropical rainforest, an array of interesting wildlife and its uniquely dramatic volcanic landscapes. But did you now that Lord Howe is also home to a fabulous little golf course too? Well, now you do.

Tourists numbers are capped at 400 people here so rest assured that even though the Lord Howe golf secret is out, exploring the island (and playing a round) will never feel hurried. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Expect to spend this golf holiday of a lifetime unwinding in paradise. Balance your time on the course with a range of relaxing island activities. Gather the ladies, set your own pace and make this a golf adventure to remember.

Course Overview

Nestled in arguably the prettiest pocket of seaside land on the entire island is where you’ll find the golf course. Keep in mind that nobody claims teeing off here to be an easy feat (many of the fairways are on the narrow side and the greens are tiny in comparison to mainland courses) but fun and absolutely stunning it is. To be honest this 9 /18 hole course sure has its challenging moments (it’s rumoured that no one has ever made par here), but you’ll find strategic reprieve along the way as more fairways begin to open up. The approach to their signature hole (the 8th) is distractingly pretty – stay focused, hit it straight and you’ll be pleasantly rewarded on the scorecard.

The golfing community is incredibly proud (warranted) of their course and the spectacular clubhouse is a hive of activity come Friday afternoon / evenings. Visitors are welcome to join the locals for a game of ‘Chook Run’ - a fun stableford event where, you guessed it, you’ll be in the draw to win a frozen chook.

Club hire is available, but I’d recommend taking a few of your favourites if you have space. You can safely store your equipment at the clubhouse too which saves bringing your golf gear to the course each time you play. Overall, blending golf with a Lord Howe Island holiday is the very definition of our magazine’s core ethos ‘play the game, live the lifestyle’.

The Lord Howe Island Golf Open

Held from the 30th April – 6th May 2022, the Lord Howe Island Golf Open features over $8000 in prizes. An entry fee of $300 includes welcome drinks, player’s pack, green fees and the concluding presentation dinner, or $400 if you wish include daily buffet lunches too. It’s a limited field of 50 players (all handicaps welcome) so don’t hesitate on your competition entry decision.

Island Dining

The remarkably fresh air produced by the islands delicate eco-system makes your body and soul feel wonderful from the moment you step off the plane. And the eateries here really up the healthy living stakes by offering a standout selection of delectable meals and local treats. You’ll find dishes of local king fish on most menus and there’s always the option for a beachside BBQ (free for tourist use). Here’s a list of top Lord Howe Island cafes and restaurants to visit.

Anchorage Restaurant – the central go to zo zone for a big breakfast, hearty lunch and a shared dinner feast. Note: Anchorage sells daily fresh baked bread to the public and serves primo coffee all day.

Coral Café – located within the museum complex (a must see for history buffs) this kitsch cafe is favoured by locals and tourists alike. Dine alfresco under a kentia palm ladened street and enjoy Asian themed cuisine of the highest quality.

Thompson’s Store – an old fashioned general store that pumps out the best burgers on the island – no word of a lie.

The Crooked Post Bar – heaven on earth for cocktail lovers. Overlooking the aquamarine lagoon, Tim and the team are dedicated to serving sunset drinks and nibbles with ambient tunes and postcard worthy views. Tip; order a refreshing gin based beverage from the Lord Howe Island Distilling Co. and you’ll likely want to take a few bottles home as short lived (you’re going to want to drink them) mementos.

Sunset Bar & Grill – is the restaurant at the ‘golfy’ that’s created a big following for its excellent meals, friendly service and its panoramic vistas. You’re bound to be impressed by fresh local seafood dishes, sizeable steaks and a variety of gourmet club style feeds.

Non-Golfing Activities

Lord Howe Environmental Tours – get up close with nature on a marine excursion (snorkelling optional) and be blown away by the water clarity of the world’s most southern coral reef. The coral viewing tour on the glass bottom boat is a phenomenal experience - do it.

Birdwatching – did you know that Sir David Attenborough filmed part of his ‘Life with Birds’ documentary series here? You’ll realise why as soon as you arrive. The island is teeming with unique and endemic birdlife. The birds of Lord Howe Island are incredible tame since they’ve no need to fear humans and/or predators.

Hiking – experienced hikers and energetic visitors will love the intensity of island hikes on offer. While those who prefer to take it easier are best to grab a map and set off on a short gentle hike with friends. Feeling adventurous? Book a spot with Sea to Summit Expeditions and local guide, Jack Shick will share his fascinating in-depth knowledge of the Mt. Gower trails and the rare plant and bird life found here.

Accommodation Options

No matter what your holiday style is Lord Howe Island delivers the goods. There’s luxury resort living by way of the famed Capella Lodge and the exclusive enclave of Pinetrees Lodge.

Or, if you’re more inclined to feel at home amongst a self-contained cottage (that’s me) nestled in the trees by the charming Ned’s Beach than Ebbtide Apartments is the place to be. Ebbtide offers private lodgings for golfing groups and has the added advantage of being owned and operated by the captain of Lord Howe Island Golf Club, Emma Crombie. Guests can therefore expect to gain insider golf knowledge from both Emma and her mother Julie. Both ladies are gifted golfers, long time island locals and wonderful hosts.
